Cupping Therapy in Holborn, Central London

Cupping uses glass or silicone cups to create suction on the skin, lifting the tissue underneath rather than pressing into it. It comes from traditional Chinese medicine and is used here mainly for tight, aching backs, shoulders and legs. Cups may be left in place for a few minutes or slid along oiled skin.

    What Cupping Helps With

    Tight backs and shoulders

A different sensation from massage, which many people find works well on stubborn areas between the shoulder blades.

    Training soreness

Often used alongside sports massage during heavy training blocks or after a race.

    Stiffness and restricted movement

Cups are frequently combined with gentle movement so the area is used again while it is warm.

    Part of an acupuncture session

Most often added within an acupuncture appointment rather than booked entirely on its own.

    How a Session Works

    1

    Consultation10 min

A short history, a look at where you are sore and stiff, and a check for anything that would make cupping unsuitable.

    2

    Preparation5 min

You lie comfortably with the area exposed and oiled if sliding cups are going to be used.

    3

    Cupping20 min

Cups are applied and either held in place or moved slowly across the muscle. Tell your practitioner if the pull feels too strong.

    4

    Aftercare5 min

Advice on the circular marks, which are not bruises and usually fade within a few days, and on what to do for the rest of the day.
